Music as a doorway… inward

Music and meditation are not often placed in the same category. Yet for many people, music is one of the most direct paths to inner stillness, emotional release, and even ‘transcendence’.

Think of how naturally we turn to music to relax, lift our mood, or find comfort. At times, a melody can transport us beyond thought and leave us in a state that feels almost sacred.

Across cultures and throughout history, traditions have used sound as a doorway to the inner world.

From Gregorian chants and Sufi devotional music to Tibetan throat singing, Japanese shakuhachi, or the ancient ragas of India, music has long supported contemplation and spiritual connection.

Great composers — Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi and many others — continue to move listeners centuries later. Why does this happen? Some speak of beauty or genius. Others describe the effect in terms of energy or vibrations.

In Sahaja Yoga meditation, practitioners say that after self-realization they develop a subtler sensitivity within the nervous system. In this state, certain music may be felt physically — often as a gentle, cool sensation — and is experienced as harmonizing and nourishing.

According to this view, the human being possesses a subtle system of energy centers (chakras) and channels. When these are balanced, we feel emotionally, mentally and spiritually well. Music, through melody and rhythm, is believed to interact with this system and help restore harmony.

Indian musician and researcher, the late Dr. Arun Apte explored this therapeutic dimension and developed what he called Medicinal Indian Vocal Music Therapy. He suggested that specific sounds and notes can influence our psycho-physical state and support inner balance.

Whether one explains it through neuroscience, psychology, or subtle energy, the experience is familiar: some music simply makes us feel better, quieter, more ourselves.

In recent years, more meditation classes have begun experimenting with music. For many people, it makes the journey inward more natural and joyful.

Perhaps this is why certain masterpieces never lose their power. They continue to awaken something timeless within us.
